Star Wars Day : May the Force be with You

With the latest chapter in the Star Wars saga now available on DVD and Blu-ray, it’s time to celebrate Star Wars day properly this year.

When is Star Wars day?

May the Fourth, of course.

Why is it Star Wars day?

Just say it out aloud, “May the Fourth be with you”, and you’ll soon see.

When did Star Wars day start?

Surprisingly, it originated on 4th May 1979 when Margaret Thatcher became Britain’s first woman prime minister. Her party placed an ad in a newspaper saying: “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.”

Since then it has been picked up by George Lucas and turned into a day when fans the world over celebrate Star Wars with everything from impromptu lightsabre battles to humming the theme song while making coffee.

Traditionally, May has always been an important month for Star Wars, with all but one of the seven films being released in that month. The exception being The Force Awakens which was released in December 2015.

So have a good Star Wars day and be ready to face the Dark Side the next day, the Return of the Fifth.
