United Kingdom: Higher Financial Requirements & ETA

London is calling! The UK remains one of the top study abroad destinations, but new regulations mean students must meet stricter financial requirements and obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). 

• Increased Financial Proof: Starting January 2, 2025, students must show they have £1,483 per month in savings for studying in London (previously £1,334). For other cities, the requirement is now £1,136 per month (up from £1,023). These funds must be in your account for at least 28 consecutive days before applying for your visa. 

• ETA Requirement: From April 2, 2025, Schengen Area citizens must obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before arriving in the UK. The application process is simple: an online questionnaire that takes around 10 minutes to complete. However, make sure to apply at least 72 hours before your departure. 

What This Means for You:

• Check the updated financial requirements before applying 

• Make sure your bank statement meets the 28-day rule before submitting your visa application 

• Apply for your ETA before traveling to avoid any last-minute issues at the airport 

United States: Visa Processing Delays and Uncertainty

Getting a study visa could be more complicated this year. 

• No Major Changes for Short-Term Students (Yet): Summer programs are not directly impacted, but visa delays are possible 

• Stricter Visa Processing: The US prioritizes full-time students, which means summer program applicants may face longer wait times or extra scrutiny 

• Future Policy Uncertainty: Changes to Optional Practical Training (OPT) and H-1B visas may affect students who plan to transition from a summer program to a full-degree course 

What This Means for You:

• Apply for your US study visa as early as possible to avoid unexpected delays 
• Be prepared for longer processing times and possible extra documentation requests
   

Australia: Stricter Visa Rules and Enrollment Caps

Australia has tightened its student visa policies, limiting the number of new international students in 2025 and increasing financial and language requirements. 

• Enrollment Cap Introduced: Only 270,000 new international students will be accepted in 2025, including 145,000 at public universities and 30,000 at private institutions 

• Mandatory Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE): Starting January 1, 2025, students must submit a valid CoE with their visa application. To obtain a CoE, students must secure admission, pay the required tuition fees, and confirm their place in the programme. A Letter of Offer is no longer accepted 

• Greater Financial and English Requirements: Students must prove they have at least AUD 29,710 in savings (previously AUD 24,505) .
  The minimum IELTS requirement has increased from 5.5 to 6.0 (or equivalent) 

• Visitor Visa for Short Programs: Visitor visas have fewer requirements compared to student visas, making the application process simpler and faster. If your program lasts less than three months, you may consider apply for a Visitor Visa instead of a full Student Visa

• Confirm that your university will provide a CoE before applying for a visa 

• Budget for the increased financial proof requirement 
• Make sure you have your IELTS test or equivalent English certification ready
   

Canada: Reduced Study Permits and Stricter Work Rules

Canada remains a top study destination, but new visa policies have made it more competitive for international students. 

• Fewer Study Permits: Canada has reduced the number of student visas it issues, so applications are more competitive 

• No More Fast-Track Visa Processing: The Student Direct Stream (SDS) program has been discontinued, meaning visa processing will take longer 

• Tougher Post-Graduation Work Rules: Students must pass a language test to qualify for a post-graduation work permit. If you plan to extend your studies, keep this in mind 

• Increased Work Hours: Students can now work 24 hours per week (previously 20 hours per week), allowing for more opportunities to gain work experience while studying
